postheadericon The late Jack Lalanne

Just after fitness guru Jack Lalanne passed away in January of 2010, I was asked by the family to design his headstone plaque which would serve as his official marker at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
I have a history with the Lalanne family that dates back to 2004 when was commissioned to create a portrait of Jack for his 90th birthday. I was honoured to be asked to design the plaque and based my design on the portrait.

I did a few sketches until both myself and the family were happy with the composition.

The design was then sent to an engraver who had the tough job of engraving every little line.

And here it is! Over all they did a good job. My only issue is the dog. He looks psycho!

postheadericon My son's monster masks

Every so often I like to post photos of some of the newest masks my son has created.
Pretty cool for a 17 year old kid.
The second last pic is of Jason and Greg Nicotero from a few years ago. Greg is the special effects wizard behind The Walking Dead tv show.

postheadericon Guillermo del Toro

One of my favourite movies is Pan's Labyrinth directed and written by Guillermo del Toro. If you have never seen the film, it is a true masterpiece. Recently, during the 2011 Toronto Fan Expo, my son Jason and I were fortunate enough to bump into Guillermo walking through the crowd! He was kind enough to stop and talk to us for a few minutes and pose for a picture. Some of Guillermo's other films include both "Hellboy" films and  "Blade" with Wesley Snipes.

postheadericon Prints

As we are getting closer to the Holiday Season I thought I would remind everyone that prints would make an excellent gift!  If you don't see a particular illustration of mine on sale, just send me an email and I will let you know if it's available!

As some of you know, most of the artwork that I am asked to do has nothing to do with pinup girls. In fact pinups are a really small part of my life as an artist and yet most people know me for it. In fact, some of the work I have done never gets seen by the general public at all.  I do a lot of storyboard work that only gets viewed by the client before being made into a television commercial. Other work I have done most people wouldn’t recognize as mine because I don’t sign my name. (that’s a no-no in commercial art!) Here’s an example of something I was asked to do recently. There was a contest among several high schools in the states to come up with an ad campaign for Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” program. A program designed to get kids off their butts and doing something physical. The winning design would be chosen to actually represent the Let’s Move organization in various print ads, posters, etc. Well the design that I created for one particular high school team won!  I worked with the girls from the school and did my best to translate their idea into a pleasing illustration. Needless to say I was pleased as punch!

Here is the letter I received from their teacher:

Dear Ted:

It is an honor to thank you for all your help and support.  When I saw the ad for the first time, I was very much impressed.  The students were telling me that you knew exactly what they had envisioned.  They were very fortunate to have your professionalism in this project.  They wouldn't have achieved this much without your guidance.  Words cannot express our gratitude for the leadership that you provided the girls with.  This was an experience of a life time for them.  You have contributed in opening new doors for their bright future.

Thank you once again.

Cordially,
Diana Ramos

Very cool! So if you ever see this poster somewhere now you know who was behind it..!
